Free things to do in Brisbane
If you’ve been following the blog you’ll know already that we love a free attraction so let’s cut to the chase; here are our favourite free things to do in Brisbane!
Spend the day at Queensland Museum
We spent our first day in Brisbane at the Queensland Museum and we loved it. The museum is a mix of free and paid exhibitions. Among the free exhibitions we learnt about cycling, snakes and the great barrier reef! This was one of our favourite free things to do in Brisbane. They have a great website where you can plan your visit and see what exhibitions and events are on.
Spend an arty morning at Queensland Art Gallery (QAG)
Located on Brisbane’s south bank. The QAG offers a number of free exhibitions including aboriginal art, Japanese Art, European classics and various large sculptures of modern art. We liked the sculptures and use of water throughout this compact museum.
Meander through the colourful exhibitions at the Gallery of modern art (GOMA)
Located next door to the QAG the GOMA ups the ante on Modern art. I’d say this is my favourite modern art gallery of Australia. It felt fun and interesting and we really enjoyed the Japanese gallery downstairs. This gallery is one for the adults and the kids! Find more information on their website
Relax at Streets beach and surrounding park
We think this concept should be introduced in all cities across Australia. Streets beach is a man made beach with a series of pools right on the edge of the river offering tanning opportunities with views of the city. It has toilets, changing rooms, water fountains and lots of restaurants and cafés nearby. We loved this free attraction so much we visited it three times!
Wander through Roma Park Land
Roma Park Land is described as “one of Brisbane’s premier parks” and “is considered to be one of the two best examples of contemporary display gardens in Australia”. You can catch a free guided tour through the park at 11am and 1pm starting from The Hub. We didn’t have time to visit but will be going when we pass through Brisbane later on our trip.
Visit chocolate heaven at Noosa Chocolate Factory
Ok so this one is only free if you can resist buying some chocolate, and if you can you’ve got more willpower than me. After marvelling at the variety of chocolate I had a $4 Rocky Road hot chocolate. They melt huge chunks of their signature Rocky Road to create this drink. Enough said.
Not an attraction in itself but still useful to the budget conscious is Brisbane’s free city loop bus. Look out for the red stops and hop on the bus to see the city. We hope this post helps you enjoy Brisbane as much as we did.

My goodness – where to start?
I’ve no idea why people follow fly-ins rather than those who live there or know the place intimately. If you want to understand Brisbane and what the best things there are to see in a few days you could start by consulting the locals who are in the know or at least head to the club that is well known to both backpackers and businesspeople who have done their homework and made their contacts in advance.
Yet another touristy surface evaluation of our city which has much more to offer for those who are interested in finding the real culture of the place.
